Some prehistoric birds who could not fly learned to swim and fish. Scientists believe that these creatures were the ancestors of penguins.
Hesperornis could grow up to 1.5-2 meters in length, had small wings. He swam due to skin blades on his legs (he had no membranes). Had teeth on the lower jaw and on the back on the upper. His diet was: fish.
Interesting fact: Archeopteryx possessed a beak, teeth, and a long tail, like that of lizards, covered with feathers. His wings, like his legs, ended with his fingers.
If you look at the plucked chicken, you can find the similarity of its physical structure with the structure of prehistoric reptiles.
Ancient birds not able to fly
When the winged reptiles disappeared, only real birds with a wide variety of species remained on the continents. Some became so large that they could no longer fly. But they adapted to walk and grab prey on the go. They were very predatory and incredibly large, 3-4 meters tall. Some species have disappeared not so long ago.
Modern birds that can't fly
Unusual birds, unable to fly, are still found in some regions of the Earth, especially in Australia and Oceania. These are cassowary, emu (ostriches) and kiwi. For more details about them, see our article: Birds that Can't Fly
